[Stoves] Gel Fuel Emissions

Dear Frank

The heat content of the rice husks is well known - HHV of about 14 MJ/Kg

Roger Samson (who I finally got a chance to meet last Saturday morning) says
that the waste product from the Mayon Turbo stove which is ostensibly a
gasifier, has 62% silicon. I worked out that the carbon in it was worth a
little over 9 MJ/Kg of 'char' based on the carbon content.

The char is 29% of the initial fuel mass, but that might be based on a 14%
typical moisture content in the original fuel.

More understanding is needed on this.

Roger??

Thanks

Dear Crispin,

I could not find your EMail of a few weeks ago but if I remember
correctly you were asking about rice hulls and the ash content. Saying
you thought it was around 20% or higher. (?)

Some recent work I did showed the ash to be 20.6% dry wt so the organic
fraction is 79.4% dw. BUT then the Carbon is found to be only 26.7%dw
and it should be ~40% for organic biomass ash free.. I think what is
happening is going from 105 degC for moisture to 550 deg. C for organic
matter/ash determination more water from hydration is coming off.
(?).. Rice is real different than any other 'small' fuel I have seen
and Silica does strange things -complicated. I see this coating inside
of water pipes etc. If the above is true you are right in thinking the
ash is really higher than the test shows and we need to rethink the
energy we get from Rice to a much lower value.

Frank
