The pictures and video look great.
Could you try putting a slightly larger can (maybe use the guidelines
for a pot skirt), inverted with a hole cut in the center just large
enough to sit on the top rim of the combustion can? Hopefully, this
will heat the secondary air entering the holes on the outside rim of the
combustion can, add some velocity to it, and keep the sides of the
combustion can relatively hot. This would more closely approximate the
burner of an Argand lamp/heater, assuming the comparison is valid.
If you have enough properly sized cans, as above, for some experiments,
perhaps you could cut some holes of varying diameters to choke the top
opening of the combustion can and also play with the vertical position
of the central flame spreader.
