Further to my earlier post about preheating, have a look at what is going on
at Beavercreek Oregon with regard to preheating the air on car engines:

They claim a reduction in fuel use and lower emissions achieved by this
bolt-on device. Unichip of Hillsboro Oregon is making the controllers.

In a stove it works by burning the CO and limiting the production of
particulates.
