[Strawbale] bamboo pinning

Yes, that is what I like about the 1/2" dia. nursery pins we use is that they can be pulled almost into the bale but I admire using what you have on hand.  Perhaps your boards can be ripped to a smaller 1X1 dimension to work pretty well.

  Why is bamboo the common material used for pinning?  We are doing some vertical pinning to help strengthen/stabilize the walls.  What would be wrong with using lumber that we have on hand?  The only thing I could think of was that bamboo, being round, would suck into the bales better than a 1x2 would.  Just wondering.
