[Strawbale] re. metal vs. plastic mesh / electric field issues

Hmm... I heard a similar story from my physics prof in college (early  
80s), however
in his version, it was the "damn hippies" that used to do that to  
steal power in
the 60s at their communes. (From the way he used that phrase several  
times, we figured
he'd had his heart broken at one of those communes). :-)
