[Strawbale] Strawbales for garden walls... current concensus?

Would like to start a discussion on the current feelings about using  
SB for garden walls? I've read about failed
walls, I've read about them working, I've heard comments that  
"They'll just rot, don't do it".

So what is the current consensus from people with experience? Is  
there a way to do it successfully short of putting
a full tile roof with overhangs on the entire wall?
