     Thank you.  This was very helpful.

     I cast about for something which was spreadable and would get 
behind the lath, harden reasonably quickly, and cohere well enough. 
Masonry cement!  The kind you use for brickwork, with no fiber.

     It worked beautifully.  Job is all done, for this season.  Second 
coat will go on in the spring.
