They could. But the posts should be a lot larger than 8 square inches. 
Say 6x6 or 8 x 8 inches minimum, if square, equaling 36 or 64 square 
inches. Or  10" round posts, equaling about 78.47 square inches.

Of course, they could also be made to look like ancient Roman or Greek 
columns, but that would take some seriously advanced woodworking to make 
the forms--this would advanced patternmaking as practiced in iron 
foundries--....and making the forms would require a major chunk of time 
if there are a lot of posts.

An SB house whose roof was supported by such columns would be, shall we 
say, quite an eclectic design challenge as well....

Hmm. Might be fun to work on that one. Say, a Tuscan farm villa design 
which recycled old Roman columns...?
