If I'm correct, the turbulence generated by a recessed window when
compared to a window flush with the wall surface would increase heat
loss. Also, only important for deep recesses, there is more
external surface area which leads to further heat loss. Consider
the design of heat exchangers: lots of surface area, generating lots
of turbulence apparently makes a good heat exchanger. The question
is, how big is the difference?

Maintenance issues aside, I'd heard that inset windows lose less
heat. The reasoning, apparently, is that airflow over a flatter
surface (wall and window) is greater, thereby being able to peel
away more heat.
Can anyone back this up?
