The distinction between HRV and ERV is not whether it is a heating or 
cooling climate, but what happens to the moisture in the air.
Just consider an HRV as recovering the heat in the outside air, and 
keeping it outside.

Only compared to opening the windows. the HRV or ERV just provides 
ventilation air.  For an unoccupied house, it would cool better with 
the *RV off.
