The answer to your  question about plaster mesh is:
It depends.
If your location requires  design elements that resist seismic activity,
then there are more experienced  folks to answer that question.
I doubt that the plastic Tenax Cinteflex would  be adequate.

Frank:  Thanks for steering me into tenax  cintoflex.  I googled it, and 
found what I needed.  We'll need to run  it by our building inspector first.  That 
is, of course, if my  hubby  agrees.  As for seismic activity...well, we're 
in South Carolina.   There are sometimes small tremors here, but not like 
California.  Those  people can really shake, rattle and roll!
