as far as I can tell, a good gas water heater is more
effient than most/all tankless water heaters,
percentage wise.
A new area of specialty for lawyaers is in prosecuting
people (companies or rich people, I would guess) who
install open loop hydronic heat systems.
Water becomes stale and is said to vector legionare's
disease.
Closed loop systems can have a single source of heat
if the water is kept isolated and the heaters are
indirect heater with hot water storage.
I would say that the only advantage of a tankless
heater in a hydronic system would be if the occupants
had a regular schedule that kept all of the occupants
out of the house several hours. This would be a low
volume thermal storage system (no tank); the lower the
better, with a timer that heated the system for a part
of the time and that was not heating for a long enough
time to save on energy.
It would seems that we have both come to the same
conclution.
