Some of the systems available have tempered safety glass covers, so snow
and detritus are not a problem A solar collector installed at 50N (
i.e., in the Kootenays ) will probably be tilted enough for the snow to
slide off.
If not, it wouldn't be too difficult to provide enough roof overhang to
keep the snow off and, as a bonus, to act as a solar shelf to reflect
light and boost the output of the collectors. Not much, maybe by 10-15%.

Cheers,
