plan detail is 2" down 8" vertically at the edge of
the slab between
the slab and the frost wall, then 2"x4'x8' sheets
under the slab
horizontally. Then, in the spring (because it didn't
happen before
backfilling!!), excavating and insulating down 4'
around the exterior
perimeter (like I've already done around the rest of
my house).
Im not absolutely clear on the above but I think I
could make the following comment with it standing a
chance of being a little useful. If not then so be it.
Some people think as much insulation you can afford
should go under a heating slab (3 sheets of XPS
perhaps) and " in" the transition from the horizontal
slab to the foundation structure. (of which one side
is on the "outside" of the building) and that there is
little need having done this to insulate either in
horizontal "fan" fashion around the outside perimeter
of the building or vertically down the outside wall of
the foundation.(Assuming code frost line depths are
observed in foundation excavation.)
Others think that it is a good idea to use horizontal
"fan" insulation below grade around the outside of the
perimeter or down the outside of the foundation to
reduce the exposure to cold the underside of the house
will have. (thus reducing the amount of insulation
required under the slab) .
I dont know which group are right. Or if there are
other groups.
