[Strawbale] 2L Bottles as heat sink

I've read it recommended in several places to use 2L bottles filled with water (usually in the attic) to collect  and store heat.  Does anyone know how long these bottles should be expected to last before exchanging them for "fresher" bottles?  I'd really hate to have a big mess because a few of the bottles broke / wore out / disintegrated / etc.  Thanks. Donna.
