12 feet is correct from the NEC--Mark just cut your work in half.  
However, if this question is coming up, that gives me cause to wonder 
about other parts of the plan.

I would highly recommend two things here:

1. Have a chat with your inspector to discuss what they want in this 
instance, and maybe ask them to stop by your site to discuss things so 
you can point at them while you are talking.  You might save yourself a 
ton of hassle and get some good free advice as well.

2. Have a chat with a local electrician and go over your plans in 
detail, on your nickel.  Paying them for 1-2 hours of advice might save 
you 10 hours of unnecessary labor.
