Very good advice and part of my to-do list already.  I am in the 
early stages of planning and will be getting to that soon, just had 
not done it yet.  The large advantage of my workshop building is that 
it is treated by the electrical inspector as a garage, and therefore 
is not subject to all the dwelling requirements.

I did pay many sub-contractors for their consulting when I built my 
workshop and it was money well spent.  Since I am not paying an 
architect to do the whole shebang of plans, talking to each of the 
experts in each trade is invaluable.
