[Strawbale] Cable chase under bales

Sherwood,

Boxes as high as the normal switch locations would mean cords visible
all over that some may consider quite unsightly.

You can get the practical effect, where there will be furniture, by
locating them at or just below end-table height, so most items that
are located there can be plugged in without searching below for the
outlet but the cords will still hang down out of sight.

I think I mentioned here before that in the living area, I thought
about mounting a chair rail set out from the wall perhaps three to
four inches--a "t" arrangement of boards. That would provide a shallow
shelf for putting some art on top, and I could run cords and mount
outlets below--completely outside the wall and any surface material,
whether render or other. That would reduce damage from furniture
hitting the wall (which is, after all, the original purpose of a chair
rail), keep outlets out of sight yet fully accessible, and permit new
cords of any type to be run there at the first need at little time or
expense.

I would run the lines to the rail from the floor or from the attic,
using a simple verticle chase to do it--but very few would be needed.

The rail would be finished either with a very durable and washable
enamel or a good stain and wax, so it would contrast nicely with the
wall surface and texture. It would also be a natural divider if one
wished a two-tone wall treatment, with the lower part as a sort of
wainscoting.
