Having read the comments of some folks who responded to this suggestion,
and having thought it over since yesterday, I've also come to the
conclusion that the tensile strength of various straw types is not that
important compared to how densely packed the straw is.

Agreed.
There is also a possibility that some varieties of any given grain may
be more moisture resistant as well. However, since there are thousands
perhaps tens of thousands of varieties of wheat alone, researching this
last variable might take an awful long time and would probably be quite
expensive.
So, onto to other and hopefully more practical considerations. :-)
