Of course, up lift from wind is a more common
occurrence. I am reminded of the size, speed and power
of clipper ships when wondering of the amount of up
lift force that might occur with wind.
I saw a few Sears Craftsman kit houses from the early
1900s that looked like they had been nailed to their
foundations, bounced off their foundations and then
torn down down in Santa Monica, California after the
Northridge quake. So many buildings were damaged
including 2 high rises (That I saw) and freeway
over-passes that build codes were up dated.
One high rise on Olympic Bl just west of the 405 had a
story in the middle "pancake" and another high rise in
the Valley, perhaps near Van Nuys, had one side's
exterior wall detached and move away from the building
at the bottom and downward. Since I felt confident in
California's stringent pre 1989 and 1994 building
codes prior to the damage, I might over build systems
that carried high loads on experimental buildings and
over build anything that intuitively seemed tentative,
to a non-engineer type;-)
I have noticed that threaded rods for hold downs have
in many cases been increased from 1/2" to 5/8".
