Thanks for the explanation, I really appreciate it!
The earthquakes (David [1994] and) I went through,
speaking for myself only, had tremendous uplift and I
thought I was going to die. I will accept the
skin/I-beam theory for now, but I do not understand
why no positive mechanical connection to the
foundation is needed, or how it works if there is one.
Re-bar, sticking up a foot or so like anchor bolts
might be helpful, but the re-bar I have seen in many
demo projects, oxidizes and pins sticking up without a
connection emulating a sheer wall with hold downs
seems under built to me. A speed wrench with a crows
foot style socket might make tightening nuts on
threaded rod fun! That and cutting the rods as they
are tightened, if they are too long.
