[Strawbale] Cement vs. clay (was 'trashcrete')

If it were me, I'd check to see how strong the odor of
creosote is from the RR ties, and make sure that odor
would not negatively impact the inhabitants or
function of the structure.
A lot of the used RR ties I have seen are pretty
screwed up structually.
Off the top of my head, 40 yards sound high, I was
wondering if it is high and if so, why?
