I came across an abandoned 'homestead' not too far from here, last year 
or the year before, and realized that all the cementy-looking stuff 
lying around on the ground and inside the foundation was the remains of 
a 'cordwood' house. I think they used hand-peeled green wood, and some 
odd clay-looking stuff from a few hundred feet away that turned out to 
make a really poor mortar. Almost all the wood was gone, picked up to be 
used in campfires, I suppose,  leaving crumbly mortar pieces with 
interesting patterns in it.
Mute evidence of good intentions that went awry.
