I would like to share some great resources for making your own site-built
cabinets (and getting a great kitchen to boot).
Sam Clark is a fellow I greatly admire that has written or cowritten a
couple of books that focus on practical and relatively simple solutions
around homebuilding, accessibility, and specifically for this discussion,
kitchens and cabinets.
He developed/documents a pretty simple method of post construction that uses
hardly any plywood at all. I'm using a modified version to create my kitchen
cabinet with all the posts and much of the face trim made from my old-growth
doug fir 2x4s that I salvaged from my attic rafters.
The books are listed here:

The Remodeling a Kitchen book is great for the overall process and it does
cover a lot of the design elements from his earlier books, yet if you want
details on his method of building your cabinets in place then I would
recommend getting a copy of The Motion-Minded Kitchen - out of print but
copies are usually available at Amazon or other sources.
Here's a link to where Sam specifically points out how building your
cabinets in place is a great choice (and a good picture of how they look):

Best of luck!

PS His book on home design and building The Independent Builder is a
terrific resource for practical ideas and thinking on homebuilding, too!
