I am of distinctly divided mind about the tendency to showcase only the most
elaborate "green" homes in articles and on television. On the one hand, I am
fascinated when people can build economically and sensibly in a manner that
makes life more pleasant for the families who will live in the home.
On the other hand, for these techniques to become more widespread, it is a
"good thing" that opinion and style leaders are adopting a particular method
or style, as many of the same things will become acceptable downstream
through more of the market.
Remember, please, that most people are uncomfortable with too much sudden
change from what they expect to see. By exposure to more and more techniques
among the "rich and famous" among us, more people become aware of them and
also begin to find having a house that is in some respects like the ones
they have seen featured becomes within their imagination as desirable.
I wish others thought as most of us do, though--that there is something
elegant about building modest and affordable houses that conserve resources
and budget and make all our lives better in the process.
