[Strawbale] [practical-sbc] Too Late to Plaster?

>From a strictly practical standpoint you're better not to plaster than to
plaster and have your plaster fail. If you're not sure that you have time
to plaster the outside of your building before the cold temperatures hit
then don't. Wrap your building in house wrap stapled to the curb (toe up,
sill plate, whatever you call it where you are building) and the top plate
(header, beam, or whatever you call it where you are building) then put
vertical straps of 1x3 every ten feet or so to prevent billowing and
tearing. Use house wrap and not vapour barrier (air migration barrier or
whatever it makes you happy to call it) so that moisture can escape rather
than being trapped and condensing against your bales. Leave the house wrap
intact over the windows and as many doors as possible to provide the best
possible protection. With the outside of the building wrapped you can heat
and plaster the interior or simply leave the building unplastered until next
year. With rubble trench and slab foundations the building should be heated
in the winter whether you are living in it or not to keep the ground under
the building thawed and to prevent heaving and cracking.
Hank.

Subject: [practical-sbc] Too Late to Plaster?
Once again, I need the help of the group.
My straw bales are in, and over the weekend we'll be installing the
welded wire our engineer stipulated. This means that our next step
is plastering, which I hope to begin within a week or two. I'll be
using a lime-based plaster, with perhaps one bag of white portland
cement to every two bags of lime, at least for the brown coat.
Here's my problem. Here in Winnemucca, the temps are supposed to
remain nice (60's daytime) for quite a while. However, the nights
will get down to the high 20's some nights.
I've heard you're not supposed to let lime plaster get below 40
degrees while it's curing. However, I have a wrap-around porch and
access to lots of clear plastic. If I wrapped the house with clear
plastic, then anchored the plastic on the bottom with a row of bales
(I have half my bales left over!), would it keep the house warm
enough to plaster?
Financially, it's in my best interest to get the house signed off by
the building inspector within the next two or three months.
Thanks,
Teresa
