I agree that high volume thermal mass generally
requires large amounts of energy to heat, but the mass
should be insulated and heated as efficiently (least
energy expended) as possible or as cleanly (low carbon
as the solar heating system you propose) as possible.
A low thermal mass system such as an insulated wood
floor, in a super insulated house, that includes super
insulation for the ceiling, minimal waste line vents
and heat recover ventalation would use a smaller than
normal heating system for that size house.
Water or dry earth could be used as thermal storage
that is seperate from the living space.

Don on greenershelter.com recommends insulating the TS
from the living space. So it would depend on the
design, correct?
