Hi- I am looking for info on detailing the exterior of our strawbale home for flashing. I have read many books and talked with various professionals and all of the information is difficult to sort out. We are on a very tight budget, but we also want to build our home to last. So far, we have sealed the windows prior to installation (with tarpaper) and after installation with easy seal. Then we installed trim around the windows, with a metal flashing strip along the top trim piece. Now we are trying to figure out what to do around the rest of the trim prior to plastering. Some advise not to do anything more, some say to add diamond lath, and others have suggested using millcore spaced 1/2 inch from the window trim (with caulk between) with lath overlapping it. We live in Oregon, where we get a lot of water, and despite large overhangs, rain is an issue. Does anyone have advice on how to flash around windows and doors for maximal protection at a minimal cost? I also
need to know what is the best kind of flashing design around the exterior base of the house. We had some Z flashing made, but were told by some plasterers that it needed to have drainage holes in it to release any moisture that has gotten into the walls. Is this truly necessary? I really appreciate any feedback!
