Excellent idea, David. I fourth the motion. (I'm on the GSBN DIGEST
version so I've only seen the second and third responses to this idea from
Tom the Hahn and el Lupo d'Oz (aka John Glassford).

I would be willing to offer up my Paypal account to receive emailed
donations from the international SB community. The account has been used
in the past for other international SB fundraising initiatives like the
Casas que Cantan fundraisers and library creation fundraisers without any
hitches as far as I'm aware.

It eliminates the problems associated with to cash cheques or money orders
drawn on non-Canadian sources and provides instant confirmation of receipt
and record-keeping.

But first, some thoughts on the idea of offering help.

I've found that in small communities, whenever disaster strikes, the
neighbours step up immediately to offer assistance in the way of temporary
housing, food, clothing, cash, incidentals, spiritual comfort etc. and I
suspect that may be the case in the Quebec community of Shawinigan.

Perhaps what the SB community could do is build the family a new SB house ?

From experience of past fundraising initiatives in the international SB
community, I don't think that it would be too ambitious suggest that we
set a goal of building the family a new SB house.

And I suspect that it shouldn't be difficult to round up sufficient
volunteer labour to erect the shell especially if some of the luminaries
of the SB/NatBuild movement were able to contribute some time to teaching
workshops during various phases of the re-construction and especially if
people attending the learning workshops were to make donations to the
building fund in lieu of the usual workshop fee.

And I suspect that we have enough design skills within the GSBN group that
, well, you know.

and for the non GSBN lists, Michel Bergeron sent in the additional links
to stories on the roof collapse:
